Hello candy lovers! Did you know that June is National Candy Month in the United States?

June is a time when U.S. consumers head to the pool, go to the beach, enjoy a road trip and gather with friends and family – and chocolate and candy play a central role in those quintessential summer activities. While spikes in the sales calendar in the U.S. may be different from other markets around the world, National Candy Month can serve as a blueprint for the confectionery industry and its retail partners in other countries to find success in delighting consumers.

Like many countries, the U.S. has its own unique tastes and sweet traditions. We’d LOVE to indulge you a bit and share some American classics. But before we begin, it is important to remember that chocolate and candy are treats to be enjoyed occasionally – so take the time to appreciate and savor them.

Sharing chocolate and candy is a time-honored tradition, especially during fun summer moments. S’mores – an American summer classic – are typically enjoyed around a campfire or grill. Friends roast marshmallows over the fire and then make a “sandwich” with graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. Adventurous folks may add in jelly or peanut butter to the mix. This treat was first documented by the Girl Scouts organization, and is now enjoyed by many families.

If June seems far away, you’re in luck: May 23rd is National Taffy Day.

Salt water taffy is a uniquely American candy that is found in many beach towns across the country. Many claim that the treat originated in 1883 in the famous coastal town, Atlantic City, after a storm flooded the boardwalk. A local shopkeeper’s stock of taffy was soaked, spurring him to sell “salt water taffy.” This innovative candy was then popularized by Joseph Fralinger as a souvenir for tourists in Atlantic City and up and down the East Coast.
