Craft beer has enjoyed a global renaissance in recent years, with small, independent breweries pushing the boundaries of traditional brewing. This movement has not only enriched the beer scene with innovative flavors and styles, but also fostered a vibrant community of beer enthusiasts. In Berlin, this passion for craft beer culminates annually in the Berlin Beer Week, now in its tenth edition. Running from August 30th to September 8th, Berlin Beer Week is Germany’s largest international beer festival, featuring over 35 events spread across the city.
A Week-Long Celebration of Craft Beer
Founded in 2015, the Berlin Beer Week has grown into a significant event on the international beer calendar. It offers a platform for brewers from around the world to showcase their creations and for attendees to immerse themselves in the diversity and creativity of the craft beer scene. The festival includes a variety of formats, from grand opening and closing parties, decentralized events in Bars and breweries all over Berlin, to the unique Brews Cruises, which have become a staple of the event.
Grand Opening and Closing Parties
The festival kicks off with a grand opening event at Lemke, celebrating their 25th anniversary. This event sets the tone for the week, offering a preview of the exciting beers and events to come. The closing party will be held at BrewDog, another key player in Berlin’s craft beer scene, ensuring that the festival ends on a high note.
Festival Beer and Competition
Each year, Berlin Beer Week features a special festival beer, brewed in collaboration with two Berlin breweries. These special collaborations produce unique beer styles that are only available during Berlin Beer Week. For the last few years, these special festival brews have been made using U.S. hops, specifically Yakima Chief Hops. This year, the special festival brew is made by Lemke and BrewDog. While details about this year’s festival beer are still being revealed, fans can follow the festival’s social media channels for updates.
Another highlight of the festival is a brewing competition organized in collaboration with Hop Growers of America and DelicioUS!. Ten breweries, both local and international, will compete by brewing an American Pale Ale using the same four hop varieties. Festival attendees will have the chance to taste these beers on Thursday, Sep 5, at Brewdog Mitte and vote for their favorite, with the winning brewery receiving additional hops for their next batch.
Brews Cruises: A Unique Tasting Experience
The Brews Cruises offer a distinctive way to enjoy craft beer. This year, six themed cruises will take place, each featuring live DJs playing soul and funk, as well as lively afterparties. Operating on an “all you can taste” basis, these cruises feature more than 25 beers on tap, tailored to each cruise’s theme.
Among these, the “Best of USA” cruise stands out, especially for those interested in American craft beers. This cruise provides an opportunity to sample a wide range of American brews, known for their bold and distinctive flavors. The Cruise takes place on August 31st, starting at 6 pm. Tickets for the Brews Cruises are available here.
Craft Beer for Everyone
Berlin Beer Week aims to make craft beer accessible and enjoyable for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers. The festival’s diverse range of events and welcoming atmosphere ensure that everyone can find something to enjoy. With its blend of unique events, high-quality brews, and a vibrant community spirit, Berlin Beer Week promises to be an unforgettable experience. As the festival approaches, anticipation is brewing, and the U.S. Brews Cruise is poised to be a highlight for those eager to explore the best of American craft beer in Berlin.
