Blessed with a Mediterranean climate, this state provides an ideal environment for diverse crops. From the fertile Central Valley, often referred to as the “salad bowl of the nation” due to its abundant vegetable production, to the sun-kissed vineyards of Napa Valley, California’s agricultural tapestry is a testament to its status as the nation’s top farming state. 


California’s orchards also yield an impressive array of fruits and nuts. From sweet California table grapes to luscious stone fruits such as cling peaches and plums, California’s fruit harvests are celebrated nationwide. The state also stands as a significant contributor to the nation’s penchant for nuts, boasting substantial yields of almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. Amidst these thriving orchards, the state’s wine industry also thrives, producing some of the finest wines that delight connoisseurs worldwide.

Moving northward, the Pacific Northwest emerges as a land of lush forests, breathtaking mountains, and fertile valleys. This region, encompassing states like Oregon and Washington, offers an ideal combination of temperate climate, ample rainfall, and nutrient-rich soil, giving rise to an agricultural paradise. 

The Pacific Northwest is renowned for its apple orchards, producing a wide variety of crisp and juicy apples. From the iconic Red Delicious to the tart Granny Smith and everything in between, Washington’s apples are cherished by consumers and utilized in a multitude of culinary delights. But also strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and grapes thrive in the Pacific Northwest’s cool, moist climate with Washington state’s Yakima Valley being renowned for its vineyards and wineries.

The Intermountain West, spanning states such as Idaho, Montana, and Utah is known for its picturesque landscapes and rugged terrain. But it also offers an unexpected array of agricultural produce with Idaho, often referred to as the “Potato State,” being the largest producer of potatoes in the United States. The state’s volcanic soil and cool climate create optimal conditions for cultivating high-quality potatoes, which find their way into households across the nation in various forms, from fries and chips to mashed and baked. 

The Intermountain West is also a hotspot for specialty crops like pulses (e.g. lentils, chickpeas and peas), hops, and honey. These crops, often under the radar, are essential components of regional cuisine, healthy, and contribute to the diversity of flavors found in the West.

All of the 13 western state departments of agriculture, as well as the territorial departments in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are represented by the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association, commonly referred to as WUSATA.
